http://forum.plexim.com/8369/mosfet-losses-calculation-in-thermal-wizard-via-formula
I am calculating the MOSFET Switching losses in the PLECS with the thermal wizard using the formula panel. I wrote simple formula as I don't have any switching losses graph from the vendor. My question is, Do I need to provide voltage and current value or Software will take data automatically?

If Software is taking data automatically, I am not getting any switching losses (Very minimal) which I think is wrong compare to analytical calculation.

Basically How does the formula method in the themal wizard works if the Graphs ae not provided by the vendors?http://forum.plexim.com/8369/mosfet-losses-calculation-in-thermal-wizard-via-formulaWed, 29 Nov 2023 10:28:07 +0000Copying blocks between 2 different blockset files

I'm trying to overlay spectrum data from several different simulation runs. I'm using PLECS blockset and am automating the simulation runs and parameter variation in my matlab script.
http://forum.plexim.com/8290/negative-turn-loss-relevant-current-mentioned-wrong-error

Hi,

I am trying to find switching losses of a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) with PLECS Blockset. My SubModules (SM) are half-bridge (chopper cell) and there are 4 SMs in each arm of the MMC. As a first step, I am trying to find the switching losses of a single IGBT and a single diode (out of 48 IGBTs and 48 diodes of the whole MMC). So, I have made a parallel connection of an IGBT and a diode and give them a thermal description (5SNA 2000K450300_IGBT and 5SNA 2000K450300_Diode which can be downloaded from here). The rest of the switches are just ideal IGBTD components without any thermal description. When I run the system I get this error:

Negative turn-off loss (E = -3.89521). The relevant variables are:
v = -2706.21
i = -2706.21
T = 25.8755

For the given values in the error, the turn-off loss would be negative due to PLECS interpolation for negative current. However, the given value for current in the error is wrong. The current at turn-off instant of the diode is 1222.4 A (and not -2706.21 A) and this value should give me a positive turn-off loss. Can someone please help me with this issue?

http://forum.plexim.com/8282/thermal-chain-foster-or-cauer
Hello,

I am confused of the thermal chain difference between Foster and Cauer, though there is a brief explanation in plecsmanual. For example, when I directly use foster network from datasheet to calculate the junction temperature and heat flow, the temperature is quite high (between 85 and 110 ℃) and heat flow is circa 600W, which is the same as the total power loss, I think it makes sense, only the S5 and S6 IGBT also have a high temperature, which actually didn't work in the entire simulation, that confuses me a lot.

As for Cauer network, which I transfer from Foster network directly, it has significant results compared to Foster network. The junction temperature is quite low (between 25 and 43 ℃) and the junction temperature of S5 and S6 IGBT is circa 25 ℃, which also makes sense to my assumption. However the measured heat flow is almost 0 W, totally lower than the power losses of the system (600W), for that I can't understand.

So I would like to ask, which thermal chain should I use to calculate the temperature and which results are correct related to my simulation model? And why is there so a big difference between Foster and Cauer?

Btw, how can I upload pictures to the question box, it always shows that the word count is exceeded, but in fact I didn't write a lot. My simulation model is attached, firstly that is with Foster network, you can simulate it to see the results from the "thermal" display. Then you can change it to Cauer network and observe the results, that is totally different.

Thanks a lot for your help!
http://forum.plexim.com/8279/loss-calculation-with-thermal-description
Hi,

I have a question related to the power loss calculation of IGBT/MOSFET. In order to calculate the conduction and switching losses, I built a new thermal description by myself with a simple characteristic of IGBT, then I chose the "thermal description" from the one I built. Then do I still need to set the value in "parameters", like "Forward voltage", or "On-resistance"? Since I notice that with value in "parameters" or without has a big difference in power loss results. Which one is correct? And what is the difference of "Parameters" and "Thermal" in relation to conduction loss calculation?
Hello,

I am simulating an ANPC inverter Modell. But an error occurs, said "Inconsistent source conditions after switching.", shown in the photo. It is interesting when I tried to reduce the switching frequency to 500Hz, the circuit works well. Or when I keep the switching frequency to 1000Hz, but change the amplitude from 1 to 0.99, the circuit works too. So what is the exact error for this circuit?Since I must set the switching frequency to more than 10kHz and amplitude firstly keeps 1 for a bench test, what should I do to make this circuit work?
http://forum.plexim.com/8268/series-connection-of-thermal-networks
Hi,

I'm trying to understand how 2 "Thermal Chains" connected in series are resolved

First, in red, is a thermal chain (Cauer type) and its equivalent network in Foster. Second part, in purple, is another thermal chain and its Foster equivalent. Third part, in black, is the series connection of the two thermal chains and their Foster equivalent.

Plot 1 shows how step responses of thermal chain and its Foster network are identical. Same happens in plot 2 for the second chain.

However, when I connect is series both thermal chains this is not true. Plot 3 shows how the series connection of Foster equivalent networks results in the sum of the individual step response (as I expected). But this doesn't happen for the thermal chain series connection.

Could anyone help me to clarify this?
http://forum.plexim.com/8246/t-type-inverter-total-losses
Hi!

I’m doing a study on the three-phase T-Type Inverter, the model of which can be downloaded from PLEXIM. In particular, I have to focus on how the total losses (which can be seen already from the downloaded model) change as phi changes. I have to vary phi from -180 to 180. By taking SVPWM1 Space Vector modulation (or others, like SPWM, THIPWM, THZSPWM), I get smaller losses when phi=0. In Space Vector SVPWM0, however, I have minimal losses at phi=30 (and phi=-150), and not at phi=0, as I expected. I can’t explain the reason why, I would need a little help.
Thank you very much,
Mary

P.S: in attachments, under the name of "T-Type results" I put the Excel table and graph that compares SVPWM1 and SVPWM0.http://forum.plexim.com/8246/t-type-inverter-total-lossesFri, 07 Jul 2023 12:45:46 +0000Symmetrical Components Extraction in Natural abc Frame
http://forum.plexim.com/8243/symmetrical-components-extraction-in-natural-abc-frame
Hello Everyone,

I have been trying to decompose symmetrical components in natural abc form into positive, negative and zero sequences using Fortescue's or Lyon's theory. Unfortunately, I am new to Plexim. Thus I could not achieve the objectives. Could anyone able to help me and make my simulation as attached work properly, please? Your input is greatly appreciated!

Regards
http://forum.plexim.com/8241/using-resistor-resistance-value-in-another-block
I have added a function block into my schematic which makes a calculation based on the value of a resistor in the schematic. Been looking at the manual, have gone through the forum, but I can't find a way to refer to the resistor value. I tried R1, [R1], and other possibilities, but I'm always getting an error saying the variable is not defined. What is the correct way to do this?http://forum.plexim.com/8241/using-resistor-resistance-value-in-another-blockThu, 29 Jun 2023 22:37:35 +0000Preventing division by zero
http://forum.plexim.com/8238/preventing-division-by-zero
I have created a group of blocks to calculate the power factor. But when I run it, the simulation ends with a divition by zero error. I can go and change the setting that turns division by zero into a warning, but I don't want to do that, because under other conditions I want this to be an error.

I think the division by zero is caused by the first data point in the simulation. So is there a way to tell PLECS to skip over the first data point and start analyzing from the second and on? Attached is the circuit.http://forum.plexim.com/8238/preventing-division-by-zeroThu, 29 Jun 2023 18:03:44 +0000how to model the losses for the mosfet with the body diode?
http://forum.plexim.com/8236/how-to-model-the-losses-for-the-mosfet-with-the-body-diode
How to include the reverse recovery losses of the body diode in a mosfet, e.g. SiC mosfet?

In the model of the mosfet with diode there is no posibility of entering the reverse recovery losses. The question is then: how to accurately include this losses in the simulation model?

http://forum.plexim.com/8231/how-to-quantify-the-time-delay-of-a-rt-box-controller

In the RT-Box manual, a timing diagram is given as follow. I want to determine the exact time delay in a converter system controlled by a RT-Box 2, so that I can model the system and design the parameters.

*1. In terms of period k, the voltage and current are sampled at first, as shown in the timeing diagram. And the delay between the sampling point and the beginning of period k is tAILat. What is the value of tAILat? According to the manual, a sampling rate of up to 1MHz can be realized (limited by firmware). Does it mean that tAILat is 1us? (CoderOptions - Target - Analog Input Sampling is set to "Minimize latency").

*2. In terms of PWM out, update point is set on carrier minimum, and synchronization with model step is enabled. Does that mean the computation result of Period k will be loaded at the very beginning of Period k+1? And the carrier minimum is synchronized with the very beginning of each period?

All in all, the total time delay would be tAILat + 1*Tsw(introduced by Period k) + 0.5*Tsw (introduced by PWM), which is 1us + 1.5*Tsw. Is this correct?

http://forum.plexim.com/8218/thermal-model-t-type
Hi!
I’m trying to build a thermal model of the single leg of a T-Type, consisting of 4 MOSFETs+diodes. When I try to run, I get that in Sub4 the graph has a negative peak before reaching stationat conditions, even if, when I record the MOSFET+diode temperature, this is always increasing.
I'm leaving the model built below, together with the XML for the thermal model.
I’ve only been using PLECS for a short time and I can’t figure the mistake out. If someone could help me, it would be very welcome!
Greetings, I'm working with an RT BOX CE, and I would like to know if there is a way to write a file using the block TO FILE from the RT BOX library with a sampling time of the order of many seconds, e.g. 20 seconds while using an overall discretization step time of 20 microseconds or similar.http://forum.plexim.com/8216/logging-from-rt-box-ce-through-to-file-blockTue, 13 Jun 2023 14:09:09 +0000Interpretation of conduction losses
http://forum.plexim.com/8212/interpretation-of-conduction-losses
Hi there,

I'm pretty new with PLECS and wanna try to understand how conduction losses are calculated in a MOSFET.

I’ve checked that it’s calculated as (in watts) as Vth * Ids, where Vth is the MOSFET voltage drop and Ids is the MOSFET current (from D to S). Apart from that, Vth is calculated as a function of the Ids and Tj.

However, I’ve a couple of questions:

- Is there any way to set the Rdson value? I’ve checked that there is a parameter called Ron. Is this the same? Can I have set the curves that relate the Rdson value (in p.u.) depending on the Tj and Ids?

- Why does not conduction losses consider also the term Rdson * Ids^2?
