Converter Classification

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a simulation in PLECS involving a four-switch bridge (Q1–Q4) with an inductor and load as attached in the picture. I was wondering if this circuit is best described as:

  • a single-phase full-bridge (H-bridge) inverter, or

  • a full-bridge DC-DC chopper?

I understand the topology is identical, but I’m unsure how to classify it based on fixed-duty switching (not sinusoidal modulation).

In this case I would classify it as a full-bridge DC-DC chopper.

The deciding point is the intended operation: with fixed-duty switching and a DC output quantity being controlled, the converter is operated as a DC-DC converter. “Inverter” would be more appropriate if the bridge were modulated to synthesize an AC output, for example using sinusoidal PWM.
