Hi, I want to know and understand if multitone analysis can be used to obtain loop gain for AC/DC converters. If it can be used then how does it take into account varying ac input voltage or current. Is there an example from PLECS ?
Hi Shrivatsal, for any of the frequency analysis tools in PLECS the assumption is that the inputs and outputs don’t have large signal changes. In an AC system the input voltage is constantly changing and so doesn’t lend itself to small signal analysis.
Having said that, when I have done loop design of AC/DC converters in the past using frequency analysis I have done so using the a DC source set equal to the RMS value AC source you intend to use as a starting point. Once you are satisfied with your design, you’ll need to check across the entire AC voltage range but remember to scale your output power by the voltage level as otherwise you won’t be comparing apples to apples.
Here is a video by Dr. Ali Shirsavar explaining this concept. Hope this helps!
